4 Reasons You Should Spay Your Pet

Growing up, if you had a snow day off from school, you probably heard Bob Barker on The Price is Right say his signature line “Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered”. February 23rd is National “Spay Your Pets” day, here are four reasons you should spay your pet.

Your female pet will live longer.

A study by the Banfield Pet Hospital found that spayed cats lived on average 37% longer than non-spayed cats. Spayed dogs live on average 17% longer than non-spayed. Spaying also helps prevent painful and sometimes deadly infections of their reproductive systems and reduces malignant tumors which can affect about 50% of dogs and 90% of cats.

Your animal won’t go into heat.

For cats, this means no advertising for the neighborhood toms via yowling and frequent urination (sometimes all over their home!). Cats can go into heat four to five days every three weeks during the breeding season. For dogs, their heat cycle lasts anywhere from 21-28 days and occurs twice a year. Pheremones they emit can attract male dogs from miles away. They may also be edgy, jumpy, or extra clingy.

You’ll save money!

Not only will you avoid costly medical problems down the road, but you’ll also avoid all the cleanups that come along with an animal going into heat. Plus, you won’t have to deal with an unwanted litter of puppies or kittens (fun fact, another name for a litter of kittens is a Kindle).

Helps to fight overpopulation.

Millions of animals end up in shelters every year and many are euthanized. Do your part to help keep pets out of shelters and in their loving homes.

Overall, unless you plan to breed your pet, it is always best to have them spayed. Speak with your Veterinarian on when is the best time for your animal.
